Practicing Versus Believing

In an interview with Krista Tippett on theĀ Speaking of Faith episode titled “Einstein’s God,” the great physicist Freeman Dyson made the comment “I am a practicing Christian but not a believing one.” Such propositions are superb subjects for deep and lengthy personal mediations, and are of profound value because of that. Those wishing a little more “food for thought” along the same lines might consider reading Miguel de Unamuno’s excellent novella San Manuel Bueno, Martir. Is it more important to follow the teachings of Jesus and not believe in his divinity or to believe in his divinity but not follow his teachings?
